October 2 — Major split: 416 reduced to Metro Toronto only. The surrounding Golden Horseshoe (Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Oshawa) received area code 905.
March 5 — Area code 647 overlaid 416, creating Canada's first-ever overlay area code. 10-digit dialing became mandatory in Toronto.
March 25 — Area code 437 activated as the second overlay. This allocated 24 million phone numbers to a city of 2.5 million people.
