BRT stands for Brasília Time (UTC-3) and is the primary time zone used across most of Brazil, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Brasília. When you see "BRT" as a country code or time zone abbreviation, it refers to Brazil's standard time. Brazil spans 4 time zones in total:

🏙️
Brasília Time (BRT)
UTC-3 (Most of Brazil)
São Paulo, Rio, Brasília, Salvador
🌴
Amazon Time (AMT)
UTC-4 (Western Brazil)
Manaus, Amazon region

💡 Best Time to Call: Brazil (Brasília Time) is only 2 hours ahead of US Eastern:

Pro Tips for Calling Brazil

9️⃣

Mobile = 9 Prefix

Brazilian mobile numbers always start with 9 after the area code. If you see +55 11 9XXXX XXXX, it's a mobile.

💚

Use WhatsApp

96%+ of Brazilians use WhatsApp. It's the primary communication method for both personal and business.

🔢

Area Code Required

Always include the 2-digit area code (DDD) when calling Brazil, even for local calls from abroad.

🏢

Business Hours

Brazilian businesses typically operate 8/9 AM - 6 PM. Many take extended lunch breaks (12-2 PM).

Brazil Special & Toll-Free Numbers

Brazil uses several special number prefixes for toll-free, premium, and shared-cost services. These numbers work only within Brazil:

PrefixTypeCostExample
0800Toll-FreeFree for caller0800 123 4567
0300Shared CostLocal rate from anywhere0300 123 4567
0900Premium RateHigher per-minute charge0900 123 4567
0500Donation LinesFixed donation per call0500 123 4567

Note: 0800 and other special numbers generally cannot be dialed from outside Brazil. If you need to reach a Brazilian company's customer service from abroad, look for their international number (starting with +55) on their website.

Why Is My Call to Brazil Not Going Through?

If your call to Brazil fails or you hear a fast busy signal, check these common issues:

1. Missing the "9" prefix for mobile numbers

All Brazilian mobile numbers are 9 digits and must start with 9. If you have an old 8-digit mobile number, add 9 at the beginning.

+55 11 8765-4321 → +55 11 98765-4321

2. You forgot the exit code (011 from US)

From a US landline, dial 011 before +55. From a mobile, use the + symbol instead. Without the exit code, the call routes domestically in the US.

3. Wrong area code (DDD)

Brazil has 67 area codes across 27 states. Using the wrong DDD will either connect to the wrong city or fail entirely. Double-check the 2-digit DDD in our table above.

4. Including Brazil's domestic trunk prefix "0"

Within Brazil, long-distance calls use 0 + carrier code + DDD + number. When calling from abroad, drop the 0 and carrier code — just use +55 + DDD + number.

+55 0-21-31-9XXXX-XXXX → +55 31 9XXXX-XXXX

5. Calling a 0800 toll-free number from abroad

Brazilian 0800 numbers only work within Brazil. From abroad, look for the company's international number (starting with +55) or use their website contact form.

📱Using WhatsApp to Call Brazil for Free

96% of Brazilians use WhatsApp — it's not just a messaging app in Brazil, it's the primary communication tool for everything from family chats to business transactions. If the person you're calling has WhatsApp, you can make free voice and video calls over WiFi or data.

WhatsApp Audio Calls

Free voice calls with good quality even on slow connections. Works on 3G, 4G, and WiFi. Most Brazilians prefer WhatsApp calls over regular phone calls.

WhatsApp Business

Many Brazilian businesses — restaurants, shops, doctors, services — use WhatsApp Business as their main contact method. Look for the WhatsApp icon on their website or Google listing.

When WhatsApp won't work: You need to call a Brazilian landline (office, hotel, government), reach someone without a smartphone, or need a US caller ID. In these cases, use BubblyPhone at $0.02/min to call any Brazilian number directly.
