Skype Shutdown Alternative: The Real Replacement for Skype Out (2026)

Microsoft retired Skype on 5 May 2025. Most “Skype alternative” articles you'll find focus on the wrong thing: they recommend Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Discord and Slack — all video conferencingapps. That covers Skype's video-call feature, but it misses what made Skype actually special: the ability to call real phone numbers— landlines, mobiles, business switchboards, anywhere in the world — from your laptop or phone, paying per minute. Why Microsoft Teams Isn't the Real Skype Replacement

Microsoft's official migration story is “move to Teams.” The transition works fine if you used Skype for video chats and screen sharing. It does not work for the thing Skype was famous for — cheap international calls to actual phone numbers. Microsoft's own support page is explicit:

Free Microsoft Teams can do:

• Video and voice calls between Teams users (app-to-app)

Free Microsoft Teams cannot:

• Replace Skype Out for international calling
• Use leftover Skype Credit (technically usable via Skype Dial Pad inside Teams free, but no new credit can be added — deprecated)

Paid Microsoft 365 Business plans doinclude calling, but you're paying for a whole productivity suite and the calling tier starts at around $8–15/user/month — vastly more than what a casual Skype Out user spent.

What Happened to Skype Credit and Skype Numbers

For users who had paid features at retirement, here's the verified picture from Microsoft's own support docs (May 2025 announcement):

• Skype Credit— existing credits can still be used for calls through the Skype Dial Pad inside Microsoft Teams free. Automatic top-up was discontinued. New credit purchases ceased before the retirement date.
• Skype Numbers (phone numbers)— subscriptions stopped auto-renewing 3 April 2025. Existing Skype Numbers remained active until end of paid period; after that, the number reverted. To preserve a Skype Number long term, users had to port it to another provider before retirement (and Microsoft did not provide easy porting paths to consumer VoIP services like BubblyPhone).
• Swedish Skype Numbers were specifically scheduled for termination by 31 December 2025.
• Skype Export Portal— users can export chat and call history. Microsoft extended the deadline to June 2026 for data download requests.
• Skype for Business— this is a separate product and was NOT retired in May 2025. It continues to exist for corporate customers.

You can still use existing Skype Credit through the Skype Dial Pad inside Microsoft Teams free. Microsoft's support page states: “Skype Credits can be used for calling. Automatic top up services are no longer available.” In practice this is a limited workaround — you can't add new credit, the feature isn't being developed further, and it's likely to be deprecated at some future point. Treat existing Skype Credit as a one-time runway and migrate to a real alternative before it runs out.

How to Export Your Skype Data

Microsoft extended the Skype Export Portal deadline to June 2026. Through the portal you can request a download of your chat history, call history and contact list. Submit your request via Microsoft's Skype Export Portal — large export requests may take up to 30 days to process. Once you receive the export, store it somewhere safe; it's your only record of pre-retirement Skype activity.
