History of NYC's Outer Borough Area Codes

For 37 years, all of New York City shared a single area code (212). The outer boroughs have gone through one split and three overlays since 1984:

1947

All of New York City uses a single area code: 212 — one of the original 86 codes in the North American Numbering Plan.

1984

September 1 — Area code 718 created for Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, split from 212. First time NYC had more than one area code.

1992

July 1 — The Bronx and Marble Hill (Manhattan) moved from 212 to 718.

1999

October 1 — Area code 347 activated as first overlay on 718. 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory for the outer boroughs.

2011

April 16 — Area code 929 activated as the second overlay on 718/347. Created because the available number pool was projected to exhaust.

2026

June 18 — Area code 465 scheduled for activation as the fourth code for the outer boroughs, approved January 2025.

Why So Many Codes?

NYC's outer boroughs have ~7.1 million residents, but the phone system has assigned 23.4 million numbers across the 718/347/929 complex. Cell phones, business lines, fax machines, and VoIP services each consume a number — driving the need for additional codes.
