Where Is the 347 Area Code?

The 347 area code covers four of New York City's five boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Together, these four boroughs make up roughly 85% of NYC's land area and house about 7 million of the city's 8.3 million residents.

There's one quirk worth knowing: 347 also covers Marble Hill, a tiny Manhattan neighborhood that's physically connected to the Bronx. When the Harlem River Ship Canal was dug in 1895, it cut Marble Hill off from the rest of Manhattan Island. Later landfill connected it to the Bronx mainland. Legally it's Manhattan, but its phone numbers use 718/347/929 — making it the only piece of Manhattan served by the 347 area code.

Manhattan — the borough most people picture when they think "New York" — uses different area codes: 212 (the original, highly coveted), 646, and 332. If you see a 347 number, the caller is almost certainly from the outer boroughs, not Manhattan.

History of the 347 Area Code

The story of 347 starts in 1947, when all of New York City shared a single area code: 212. As the city grew and phones became ubiquitous, that single code couldn't keep up.

1947

Area code 212 assigned to all of New York City as one of the original North American area codes

1984

Area code 718 created by splitting from 212 — assigned to Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island

1992

The Bronx and Marble Hill moved from 212 to the 718 numbering plan

1999

Area code 347 goes into service on October 1st as an overlay to 718 — no geographic split, same territory

2000

Mandatory 10-digit dialing required for the 718/347 region starting April 15th

2011

Area code 929 added as a second overlay for the outer boroughs

2026

Area code 465 approved to go into service in October — the 5th code for the outer boroughs

The creation of 347 was driven by the late-1990s telecom explosion. Cell phones, pagers, fax machines, and dial-up internet all needed their own numbers. The 718 numbering pool was running dry, and rather than splitting the region geographically (which would force existing numbers to change), the authorities chose an overlay — a second area code sharing the exact same territory.

This was NYC's first experience with an overlay, and it was controversial because it forced mandatory 10-digit dialing. Before 347, outer-borough residents could call their neighbors with just 7 digits.

Time Zone & Best Time to Call

The 347 area code is in the Eastern Time zone:

Standard Time (Nov - Mar)

EST (UTC-5)

Daylight Saving Time (Mar - Nov)

EDT (UTC-4)

Best times to call a 347 number:

  • Business calls: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM ET (Monday-Friday)
  • Personal calls: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM ET (avoid before 9 AM)
  • From the UK: Remember NYC is 5 hours behind London (EST) or 4 hours behind (EDT)
  • From India: NYC is 10.5 hours behind IST — a 9 AM ET call is 7:30 PM in India

Is 347 a Spam or Scam Area Code?

The 347 area code does see a higher-than-average volume of spam calls, but that's primarily because it serves one of the most densely populated areas in the United States. Scammers target high-population area codes because a single robocall blast reaches more potential victims.

Most Common Scam Types from 347 Numbers

7.3%

Auto warranty scams

Fake "extended warranty" calls claiming your car coverage is expiring

6.1%

"You've won a prize"

Lottery or sweepstakes scams asking for fees to claim winnings

4.0%

Mortgage/loan offers

Unsolicited refinancing or loan pre-approval calls

4.0%

Health insurance

Fake enrollment calls often targeting Medicare recipients

3.7%

Solar panel pitches

Aggressive "free solar" offers that are often misleading

Important: The vast majority of 347 numbers belong to real NYC residents and businesses. Scammers frequently use caller ID spoofing to display local 347 numbers even when they're calling from elsewhere. If you receive a suspicious call from a 347 number, don't call it back — verify the caller independently.
