Quick Answer

The 949 area code covers southern Orange County, California — including Irvine, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Mission Viejo, Dana Point, and San Clemente. It's in the Pacific time zone (UTC-8 / UTC-7 during DST). Split from 714 in 1998, 949 serves approximately 1.6 million people in one of the wealthiest regions in the United States.

Where Is the 949 Area Code?

The 949 area code covers the southern half of Orange County — from the master-planned city of Irvine and the luxury harbors of Newport Beach, south through the historic art colony of Laguna Beach, the whale-watching port of Dana Point, down to the surf town of San Clemente near the San Diego County border.

Before 1998, all of Orange County was under area code 714. The split drew a line roughly through the middle of the county, with northern OC (Anaheim, Santa Ana, Fullerton, Huntington Beach) keeping 714, and southern OC getting 949. Notably, a small section of north Irvine near the I-5/Culver Drive interchange still uses 714 — one of the quirks of the split boundary.

History of the 949 Area Code

Area code 949 was born on April 18, 1998, when the California Public Utilities Commission split southern Orange County from the original 714. The split was driven by an 18% population surge (435,000+ new residents in the 1990s) combined with the explosion of cell phones, pagers, fax machines, and early internet dial-up modems that were burning through available phone numbers.

The original 714 had already been whittled down over the decades — San Diego left in 1982 (619), the Inland Empire in 1992 (909). Even after losing southern OC to 949, the remaining 714 territory needed a 657 overlay just ten years later. Orange County is now one of the few US counties served by three distinct area codes.

CodeYearTypeWhat Happened

9491998SplitApril 18 — southern Orange County splits from 714. Driven by 18% population growth (435,000+ new residents) plus cell phones, pagers, and internet modems.
6572008OverlaySeptember 23 — overlaid on remaining 714 territory (northern OC) after 714 ran out of numbers again.

The "Orange Curtain": Orange County's cultural boundary with LA (the OC/LA border) was long called the "Orange Curtain" — a play on the Iron Curtain — reflecting OC's conservative, suburban identity versus LA's liberal urbanism. In a historic shift, OC voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 2016 for the first time since the Great Depression.

What Makes the 949 Area Code Region Unique

Irvine: America's Safest Big City

The largest master-planned city in the US, built on a 185-square-mile ranch dating to 1864. In 1960, the Irvine Company donated 1,000 acres for UC Irvine, and architect William Pereira designed the city as a "city of villages" with one-third preserved as open space. Ranked the safest large city in America for 18 consecutive years (FBI data), with 90% of high school graduates attending college.

Laguna Beach: Art Colony Since 1903

Plein air painters arrived as early as 1886, drawn by the coastal light. The first exhibition on July 27, 1918 drew 300 visitors to see 100 paintings. The annual Pageant of the Masters features "living pictures" — real people posed to recreate famous artworks. MTV filmed "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County" here (2004-2006), launching Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari's careers.

Newport Beach: Harbor of the Rich

Newport Harbor holds ~9,000 boats — one of the largest recreational harbors on the West Coast. Balboa Island was literally created from dredged bay mud; developer William Collins bought ~1,000 acres for $50,000 and built an island worth $5 million within 15 years. John Wayne, Shirley Temple, and Humphrey Bogart all lived here. Today's median home value: $3.3 million.

Dana Point: Whale Capital of the World

Officially trademarked as the "Dolphin & Whale Watching Capital of the World" (2019). Named the first Whale Heritage Site in the Americas (2021). Over 450,000 resident dolphins — more per square mile than anywhere on Earth — plus ~2,000 endangered blue whales visit May-November. The Festival of Whales (est. 1972) is the world's oldest.
