History of the 415 Area Code
Area code 415 originally covered all of Northern and Central California. Through four splits over 50 years, it was progressively reduced to just San Francisco and Marin County:
Area code 415 created as one of California's original three area codes (with 213 and 916). Covered all of Northern and Central California.
First split: Area code 408 created for the South Bay (San Jose, Santa Clara). 415 retained SF, Peninsula, East Bay, and Marin.
September 2 — Area code 510 split off for the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont). 415 retained SF, Peninsula, and Marin.
August 2 — Area code 650 split off for the Peninsula (Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Mateo). 415 reduced to just San Francisco and Marin County.
March 21 — Area code 628 overlay activated for the 415 region. 10-digit dialing became mandatory in SF and Marin.
