502 Area Code History

Area code 502 is one of the original 86 area codes created in 1947 when AT&T established the North American Numbering Plan. For seven years, every telephone in Kentucky — from Louisville to Pikeville, Paducah to Ashland — shared this single code.

502

1947 — Original

One of the original 86 NANP area codes. Covers the entire state of Kentucky — every phone number in the Commonwealth.

606

1954 — Split

Eastern Kentucky splits off. Coal country, Appalachian region, and the eastern third of the state get their own code.

270

1999 — Split

Western Kentucky (Bowling Green, Owensboro, Paducah, Hopkinsville) splits. 502 shrinks to north-central Kentucky only.

859

2000 — Split

The Lexington/Bluegrass region splits off. 502 loses its second-largest city and focuses on Louisville metro + Frankfort.

364

2014 — Overlay (270)

Overlay for western Kentucky's 270 — not 502, but shows the pattern of Kentucky codes filling up.

761

2027 — Overlay

Approved August 2025 by Kentucky PSC. Area code 761 will overlay 502 once number exhaustion hits (projected Q3 2027).

Louisville: The City Behind the 502

The Bourbon Capital

95% of the world's bourbon is produced in Kentucky, and Louisville is its epicenter. The city's Main Street was once called "Whiskey Row" — at its peak in the 1800s, more than 50 spirits-related businesses operated on a single stretch of downtown blocks.

Louisville claims two bourbon firsts: Old Forester (1870) was the first bourbon sold exclusively in sealed bottles, and the Old Fashioned cocktail was invented at Louisville's Pendennis Club in the 1880s — making it arguably the birthplace of America's most iconic whiskey drink.

Today, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail begins in Louisville and runs through multiple 502 area code towns: Bardstown (the self-proclaimed "Bourbon Capital of the World"), Lawrenceburg (Four Roses, Wild Turkey), and Frankfort (Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve).

The Kentucky Derby: "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports"

Held at Churchill Downs in Louisville every first Saturday in May since 1875, the Kentucky Derby is the longest continuously held sporting event in the United States — 151 consecutive runnings and counting. It predates the first modern Olympics (1896), the first World Series (1903), and the first Super Bowl (1967) by decades.

Derby Week generates over $400 million in economic impact for Louisville. The event has become as much about fashion (elaborate hats), mint juleps (120,000+ served during Derby weekend), and celebrity culture as it is about horse racing.

Muhammad Ali's Louisville

Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. — later Muhammad Ali — was born on January 17, 1942, in a pink house on Grand Avenue in Louisville's West End. He started boxing at age 12 after his bicycle was stolen, won Olympic gold at 18 (Rome, 1960), and became world heavyweight champion at 22.

The Muhammad Ali Center on Museum Row in downtown Louisville is a six-story museum dedicated to his life and principles. Louisville's airport was renamed Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in 2019 — one of few US airports named after an individual who wasn't a politician or aviator.

Louisville Slugger: America's Bat

Since 1884, the Louisville Slugger has been the baseball bat of choice for Major League players. The factory and museum on Main Street in downtown Louisville is recognizable from blocks away — a 120-foot, 68,000-pound steel baseball bat leans against the building's facade, a replica of Babe Ruth's 34-inch bat scaled to the building's height.

Over 100 million bats have been produced here. Every visitor gets a free miniature bat on the factory tour — making it one of Louisville's most-visited attractions.

UPS Worldport: The Logistics Hub

Louisville's Muhammad Ali International Airport is home to UPS Worldport — the largest automated package-sorting facility in the world. Covering 5.2 million square feet (90 football fields), it processes 2 million packages per day. This is why Louisville punches above its weight economically — the city is a critical node in global logistics, attracting companies that need fast shipping access to every US zip code within two business days.

Time Zone & Best Calling Times

502 Area Code: Scam & Spam Analysis

Area code 502 is legitimate, but it has a serious robocall problem. Louisville ranks #15 nationally with 53,119 FTC complaints from 20,746 unique scam numbers. Unusually, more than half of complaints about 502 numbers come from people outside Kentucky — scammers use Louisville numbers as a launchpad for nationwide campaigns.

Louisville has become a nationwide debt reduction robocall hub. Debt reduction is the #1 spam category from 502 numbers with 11,920 complaints and an 89.2% robocall rate — the highest automated rate of any scam category in any US area code.

  • Social Security scams — caller ID shows "SSI" or "US GOVT" using a local 502 number, claiming your SSN is "suspended"
  • Fake purchase alerts — robocall claims you authorized a $999 iPhone purchase; connects to scammer who wants your login
  • Government impersonation — FBI's Louisville office issued a March 2026 warning; 475 IC3 complaints with $3.15M in losses in 2025
