April 16 — Area code 407 split from 305. Covered Central Florida including Orlando, Palm Beaches, and Treasure Coast.
Palm Beach, Martin, Indian River, and St. Lucie counties split from 407, receiving area code 561.
October — Area code 321 created: Brevard County split from 407, and 321 also overlaid on Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. "321" chosen to honor the Kennedy Space Center countdown.
