Quick Tip

After dialing any code, wait 2-3 seconds for a confirmation tone before hanging up. The tone confirms the setting was applied. It may sound like a brief busy signal.

*72 - Forward All Calls (Immediate)

The *72 code is the most common Verizon call forwarding code. It forwards ALL incoming calls immediately to another number - your phone won't ring at all.

How to Use *72

  1. Open the Phone app on your Verizon phone
  2. Dial *72
  3. Immediately follow with the 10-digit phone number (include area code)
  4. Press Call/Send
  5. Wait for the confirmation tone (2-3 seconds)
  6. Hang up - forwarding is now active

Example: Forward all calls to 555-123-4567

*725551234567

Then press Call

Important

With *72, your phone will never ring. All calls go directly to the forwarding number. Use *71 instead if you want your phone to ring first.

*71 - Conditional Call Forwarding

The *71 code activates conditional call forwarding on Verizon. Your phone rings first, and calls only forward if you don't answer, are on another call, or are unreachable.

How to Use *71

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Dial *71
  3. Follow with the 10-digit forwarding number
  4. Press Call/Send
  5. Wait for the confirmation tone
  6. Hang up

Example: Conditional forwarding to 555-123-4567

Example: *925551234567

*93 - Deactivate

Combined Busy + No Answer (*41/*43)

  • *41 + number - Activate both busy and no-answer forwarding
  • *43 - Deactivate both busy and no-answer forwarding

*73 - Turn Off All Call Forwarding

The *73 code is the universal deactivation code for all Verizon call forwarding types.

Managing Call Forwarding via My Verizon

You can also manage Verizon call forwarding through the My Verizon app or website without using dial codes.

Via My Verizon App

  1. Open the My Verizon app on your phone
  2. Tap Account at the bottom
  3. Select Manage Devices
  4. Choose your phone line
  5. Look for Call Forwarding option
  6. Enter the forwarding number and save

Via Verizon Website

  1. Go to verizon.com/signin and log in
  2. Navigate to My Plan or Account Settings
  3. Find the Call Forwarding section
  4. Configure your forwarding settings

Note for Prepaid Users

Prepaid Verizon accounts can only manage call forwarding using dial codes (*72, *73, etc.), not through the My Verizon app.

How to Check If Call Forwarding Is Active

Verizon doesn't have a dedicated "check status" code like GSM carriers (*#21#), but here are ways to verify if forwarding is active:

1

Test with Another Phone

Call your Verizon number from another phone. If it goes directly to the forwarding number (without ringing your phone), immediate forwarding is active.

2

Check Status Bar

Some phones display a call forwarding icon in the status bar when forwarding is enabled.

3

Check My Verizon

Log into the My Verizon app and look at your call forwarding settings to see current status.

4

Dial *73

Dialing *73 will turn off forwarding if active. If you hear a confirmation tone, forwarding was enabled.

Voicemail and Call Forwarding

Call forwarding can affect your voicemail setup. Here's what you need to know:

Important

When call forwarding is active, calls are forwarded before they can reach your voicemail. Callers won't be able to leave voicemails on your Verizon number.

iPhone Live Voicemail Conflict

On iPhones with iOS 18+, the Live Voicemail feature can interfere with conditional call forwarding (*71). If *71 isn't working:

  1. Go to Settings → Phone (or Apps → Phone)
  2. Find Live Voicemail
  3. Toggle it OFF
  4. Try setting up *71 again

Visual Voicemail Issues

If Visual Voicemail stops working after setting up call forwarding:

  • This is expected with immediate forwarding (*72) since calls never reach your phone
  • Disable call forwarding with *73 to restore voicemail
  • Use conditional forwarding (*71) if you want both features

Troubleshooting Verizon Call Forwarding Codes

Code doesn't work / "Call cannot be completed"

  • Make sure you're entering a valid 10-digit US phone number
  • Don't add the country code (+1) - just the 10 digits
  • Ensure you're within Verizon network coverage
  • Try dialing *73 first to reset any existing forwarding, then set up again

*73 doesn't turn off forwarding

  • You may have specific conditional forwarding set up (*90 or *92)
  • Try *91 to disable busy forwarding specifically
  • Try *93 to disable no-answer forwarding specifically
  • Try *43 to disable combined busy/no-answer forwarding

Callers hear busy tone

  • Double-check the forwarding number - an extra digit may have been pressed
  • Verify the forwarding destination is a working number
  • Cancel with *73 and set up again carefully

Can't set up forwarding while traveling

  • You must be within Verizon coverage to activate call forwarding
  • Set up forwarding before leaving the coverage area
  • Once activated, forwarding will continue to work internationally
  • Contact Verizon at 800-922-0204 to set up remotely

iPhone doesn't show Call Forwarding in Settings

  • This is normal for Verizon iPhones - the Settings toggle doesn't work with Verizon's network
  • Always use dial codes (*72, *71, *73) instead
  • This is a carrier limitation, not an iPhone problem

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Verizon call forwarding code?

The main Verizon call forwarding code is *72 to forward all calls, followed by the 10-digit forwarding number. For conditional forwarding (only when you don't answer), use*71. To turn off call forwarding, dial *73.

How do I turn off call forwarding on Verizon?

Dial *73 and press Call. Wait for the confirmation tone (may sound like a busy signal) and hang up. This turns off all types of call forwarding on your Verizon line.

Does Verizon charge for call forwarding?

There's no fee to use call forwarding on Verizon. However, forwarded calls count against your plan's minutes (if not unlimited). Long-distance charges may apply if forwarding to a long-distance number.

What's the difference between *72 and *71?

*72 forwards ALL calls immediately - your phone never rings. *71is conditional forwarding - your phone rings first, and calls only forward if you don't answer, are busy, or your phone is unreachable.

Can I forward Verizon calls to an international number?

No, Verizon does not allow call forwarding to international numbers. The forwarding destination must be a US phone number (10 digits including area code).

Why doesn't Call Forwarding show up in my iPhone settings?

Verizon uses technology that doesn't support the built-in iOS Call Forwarding toggle. This is normal for Verizon iPhones. Always use the dial codes (*72, *71, *73) instead of looking for a settings menu.
