Cheap Calls to India From the USA: Verified 2026 Rates (and When 1¢ Is Real)
Cheap calls to India from the USA cost $0.01–$0.10/min in 2026 — verified rates for Google Voice, Yolla, Rebtel, Viber, Vonage, T-Mobile, Verizon and browser calling.

A cheap call to India from the USA costs $0.01–$0.10 per minute in August 2026. Google Voice is the price floor at 1–2¢/min, calling apps like Yolla and Rebtel sit at 2–2.5¢/min, and a browser dialer like BubblyPhone runs 8–10¢/min with no app, account gymnastics, or US number required. India is one of the cheapest countries on earth to call — so if you're paying more than 10¢/min, or anything at all to your US carrier without an add-on, you're overpaying.
Every rate below was checked against the provider's own public price list (or, for BubblyPhone, pulled from our live rate database) on August 24, 2026 — not copied from a stale affiliate page. How Much Does It Cost to Call India From the USA?
Between 1¢ and 10¢ a minute through any honest VoIP service, and $0.49–$3.00 a minute if you dial +91 straight from a US mobile plan with no international add-on. India's wholesale termination rates are among the world's lowest, which is why the gap between the cheap and expensive ways is a factor of a hundred:
| Service | Rate to India | Fine print |
|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | $0.01–$0.02/min | Cheapest per minute; needs a US number + Google account, credit in $10 blocks |
| Viber Out | from ~$0.01/min | Bills in full-minute blocks; India unlimited plan from $4.99/mo |
| Rebtel | €0.021/min | Or India Unlimited at €13/30 days; app + subscription to manage |
| Yolla | $0.0239/min | Or $4.99 for 300 min/30 days (auto-renews); app required |
| BubblyPhone (browser) | $0.08 landline / $0.10 mobile | No app, no US number, no subscription, no expiring credit |
| Vonage World Prime | $14.99/mo unlimited | Covers Indian landlines and mobiles; home-phone style service |
| T-Mobile | $3.00/min without add-on | India becomes free with the $15/mo Stateside International Talk add-on |
| Verizon | from $0.49/min without add-on | Global Calling add-on is $5/mo with rates from $0.05/min |
Google Voice, Viber, Rebtel, Yolla, Vonage, T-Mobile and Verizon figures read from their own published rates on August 24, 2026. BubblyPhone rates pulled from our live rate database the same day: $0.0828/min to Delhi and Mumbai landlines, $0.0965/min to Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL mobiles. Full list on our rates page.
Watch out for calling-card sites still advertising “0.9¢/min to India.” Those teaser rates are typically recovered through connection fees, weekly maintenance charges, and billing rounded up in 3–4 minute blocks — the same playbook the industry has run for twenty years. At India's price levels, a transparent 2–10¢ rate with per-minute billing almost always beats a sub-1¢ teaser after fees.
What's the Cheapest Way to Call India From the US?
Free app-to-app calls on WhatsApp if both sides have the app and data; Google Voice at 1–2¢/min if you're calling real Indian phone numbers and already live in Google's ecosystem. Everything else is a trade between price and friction:
1. WhatsApp — free, when it works
India is WhatsApp's largest market, so most family calls already happen here at no cost. Paid calling exists for the gaps: grandparents on basic phones or landlines, patchy village data, business numbers, banks, and government offices that only answer a real phone line.
2. Google Voice — 1–2¢/min, the price to beat
Genuinely the cheapest way to ring an Indian number from the US. The catches are structural, not hidden fees — more on those in the next section.
3. Calling apps (Yolla, Rebtel) — 2–2.5¢/min
Nearly as cheap as Google Voice, and they work without a US number. The trade-off: an app install, an account, top-up minimums, and bundle subscriptions that auto-renew until you remember to cancel them.
4. Unlimited plans — only if you do the math
T-Mobile's $15/mo add-on makes India free; Viber's India plan starts at $4.99/mo; Vonage World Prime is $14.99/mo. At Google Voice's 2¢/min, $15 buys 750 minutes — you need to talk 12+ hours a month before “unlimited” wins on price. Most people don't.
5. Browser dialer — 8–10¢/min, zero commitment
BubblyPhone is $0.0828/min to Indian landlines and $0.0965/min to any Indian mobile — not the cheapest per minute on this page, and we won't pretend otherwise. What you get for the extra pennies: no app, no US number requirement, no subscription, credit that never expires, and a dialer that works identically from a work laptop, a borrowed phone, or outside the US. A weekly 20-minute call to a Jio mobile costs $1.93.
Timing tip most first-time callers get backwards: India is 9.5 hours ahead of New York and 12.5 hours ahead of California in summer (IST has no daylight saving, so add an hour in winter). A US evening call lands at 4–6 AM in India — call in your morning instead: 8–10 AM Eastern is 5:30–7:30 PM in India, exactly when family is home. Is Google Voice Really the Cheapest Way to Call India?
On pure per-minute price, yes — and we'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. Google's India rate has long been the famous 1¢/min, though 2026 rate listings now show 2¢/min, so check voice.google.com/rates before assuming the old number. Either way, nothing on this page beats it per minute for calls to real Indian numbers.
Where it falls short in practice:
- You need a US phone number and a Google account to sign up. Personal Google Voice is US-only — no help for a relative abroad, a traveler, or anyone who can't verify a US number.
- Credit comes in $10 blocks through your Google account — there's no way to just open a page and place one call.
- No anonymous or instant browser calling. Everything is tied to your Google identity; if your account is ever locked, your calling (and credit) goes with it.
- It's a consumer tool. Multiple users, separate business numbers, or team billing push you into Workspace-tier products priced very differently.
Practical rule: if you have a US number, use Google Voice for cheap routine calls to India and keep a browser dialer as the no-setup fallback. If you don't have a US number — or don't want your calling welded to a Google account — the 1¢ rate was never actually available to you, and apps or browser calling are the real comparison. Calling Indian Mobiles vs Landlines: Which Is Cheaper?
Landlines — by about 15% on wholesale routes. Our live rate card prices a Delhi or Mumbai landline at $0.0828/min against $0.0965/min for mobiles, the normal pattern worldwide (and the reverse of neighboring Pakistan). In practice it barely matters: India has over a billion mobile connections and only a few tens of millions of landlines, so the number your family actually answers is almost certainly a mobile.
Two facts about Indian mobile numbers worth knowing before you hunt for a cheaper network:
- Every Indian network costs the same to call. On our rate card Jio, Airtel, Vi (Vodafone Idea) and BSNL are all exactly $0.0965/min — there's no cheap-network trick to play, unlike some countries where rates differ per carrier.
- The prefix doesn't tell you the network anyway. India has processed hundreds of millions of number-portability requests, so a number that started on Airtel may be on Jio today. Rate cards that claim different prices per Indian network are pricing a fiction.
Dialing from the US: mobiles are 10 digits starting with 6, 7, 8 or 9 — dial +91 then all 10 digits. Landlines add a city code with the leading zero dropped:
| City | Dial from the US | Our landline rate |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | +91 11 XXXX XXXX | $0.0828/min |
| Mumbai | +91 22 XXXX XXXX | $0.0828/min |
| Bengaluru | +91 80 XXXX XXXX | $0.0828/min |
| Chennai | +91 44 XXXX XXXX | $0.0828/min |
| Hyderabad | +91 40 XXXX XXXX | $0.0828/min |
Can I Make Cheap Calls to India Without an App?
Yes — from a web browser, at 8–10¢/min, with nothing installed on either end. BubblyPhone places the call from a browser tab on any laptop or phone; on the Indian side it arrives as an ordinary phone call to their Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL or landline number, so the person you're calling needs no app, no smartphone, and no data plan.
That matters in exactly the situations app-based calling fails: calling from a work computer where you can't install anything, reaching a landline or basic phone, calling Indian businesses and banks, or making the same cheap call while you travel — browser rates don't change based on where you're sitting, unlike US carrier plans that only work from the US. Sign-up takes a minute and there's no subscription or credit expiry; a one-hour call to an Indian mobile costs $5.79, billed per minute.
Do Indian Numbers Pay to Receive My Call?
No. India uses calling-party-pays billing, and incoming calls have been free on Indian mobiles since 2003: you pay the full cost of the international call, and answering it costs your family nothing — no charge, no deduction from a prepaid balance, on any Indian mobile or landline. The one exception is if the person you're calling has taken their Indian SIM abroad, in which case their own carrier's roaming charges for receiving calls apply to them. Inside India, picking up your call never costs a rupee.
