833 is a toll-free area code — free for callers, used by businesses across the US and Canada

The 833 area code is a toll-free number — it is not tied to any city, state, or country. When you call an 833 number, the call is free for you; the business that owns the number pays for it. Introduced in 2017, 833 is the newest member of the toll-free family (800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833).

What Is a Toll-Free Number?

A toll-free number is a phone number that reverses the billing: instead of the caller paying for the call, the business that owns the number pays. This has been a staple of customer service since 1963 when the original 800 numbers were introduced.

Toll-free numbers serve the entire North American Numbering Plan (NANP) region — the US, Canada, and 18 Caribbean nations. They have no geographic meaning. A business with an 833 number could be headquartered in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, or anywhere else.

Key Point

If you see an 833 number on a business card, website, or advertisement, it simply means calling that number is free for you. The business pays. It does not tell you where the business is located.

All Toll-Free Area Codes

There are currently seven toll-free prefixes. They all work identically — the only difference is when they were introduced and which numbers are still available:

Is 833 a Scam? Spam Risk Assessment

833 itself is not a scam— it's a legitimate toll-free prefix. However, scammers exploit the perceived trustworthiness of toll-free numbers to run fraud schemes. Because toll-free numbers are not tied to a location, they are harder to trace, making them attractive to fraudsters.
