Publix: From Winter Haven to $59.7 Billion
George W. Jenkins opened his first Publix store on September 6, 1930, in Winter Haven, Florida. In 1940, Jenkins opened what's considered Florida's first supermarket — a "food palace" funded with a $70,000 bank loan featuring air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, and automatic doors. The company moved its headquarters to Lakeland in 1951.
Today, Publix is the largest employee-owned company in the United States, with approximately 80% owned by current and former employees. In 2024, Publix reported $59.7 billion in revenue, employed over 260,000 people, and operated 1,432 stores across the southeastern United States. George Jenkins died on April 8, 1996, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
The World's Largest Frank Lloyd Wright Collection
Florida Southern College in Lakeland houses 13 Frank Lloyd Wright structures — the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012, the campus was Wright's longest commission: he first visited in 1938 and delivered 18 building designs over 20+ years.
Key buildings include the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel and the Water Dome — Wright's largest water feature. Twelve structures were completed during Wright's lifetime; the Usonian Faculty House was built posthumously in 2013. Students originally helped construct the buildings in exchange for tuition credits.
Sebring: North America's Oldest Racetrack
Sebring International Raceway, established in 1950, is North America's oldest permanent road racing facility. Built on Hendricks Army Airfield (a WWII B-17 pilot training base from 1941-1946), the track was founded by Alec Ulmann who improvised the airfield runways as a racing circuit. The 12 Hours of Sebring, first held March 15, 1952, is North America's oldest sports car endurance race and second only to Le Mans in international prestige.
Bone Valley: The Phosphate Capital
The 863 region sits atop the Bone Valley formation, the largest known phosphate deposit in the United States. Florida phosphate accounts for 65% of US production and roughly 25% of global supply. The first Florida phosphate shipment left in May 1888 — 10 rail cars to Scott's Fertilizer Works in Atlanta. The industry transformed Polk County from cattle country to an industrial powerhouse. The US held the position of world's largest phosphate producer from 1900 until 2006, when China surpassed it.
From Cypress Gardens to LEGOLAND
Cypress Gardens, opened January 2, 1936, by Dick Pope Sr., was Florida's first commercial tourist theme park — the "Showplace of the South." Known as the "Water Ski Capital of the World" with over 50 world records broken there, the park closed in 2009. LEGOLAND Florida Resort opened on the historic grounds on October 15, 2011.
Nearby in Lake Wales, Bok Tower Gardens features a 205-foot Singing Tower with a 60-bell carillon on 250 acres atop Iron Mountain — one of peninsular Florida's highest points at 295 feet above sea level. Dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge on February 1, 1929, the tower was commissioned by Edward Bok, a Dutch-born Pulitzer Prize-winning editor.
