Area code 513 covers Cincinnati and southwestern Ohio — including Hamilton, Middletown, Mason, West Chester, and Oxford. It serves approximately 1.5 million people across 4 counties in the Eastern Time Zone (ET). The 283 overlay was activated in April 2023, and 10-digit dialing is now mandatory.

Below: full coverage details, the history of one of America's original 1947 area codes, Cincinnati's remarkable cultural story (chili capital, P&G, the "Paris of America"), real scam data, and answers to common questions.

513 Area Code History

Area code 513 is one of the original 86 area codes from 1947. For nearly 50 years, it covered all of southwestern Ohio — from Cincinnati to Dayton. The 1996 split focused it on Greater Cincinnati, and the 283 overlay joined it in 2023.

513

1947 — Original

One of the original 86 NANP area codes. Covers the entire southwestern quadrant of Ohio — Cincinnati, Dayton, and everything between.

937

1996 — Split

Dayton and the northern/eastern portions split off. 513 shrinks to the Cincinnati metro area — Hamilton, Butler, and Warren counties.

283

2000 — Reserved

Overlay code 283 reserved for future use. Implementation suspended due to dot-com bust and slower-than-expected number growth.

513

2021 — Change

October 24 — 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory after 988 is designated for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, creating conflicts with 7-digit dialing.

283

2023 — Overlay

April 28 — Area code 283 finally activated after 513 exhausts remaining number blocks. New numbers may be 513 or 283.

Cincinnati: The City Behind the 513

The Chili Capital of America

Cincinnati chili isn't Texas chili. It's a Mediterranean-spiced meat sauce — cinnamon, chocolate, allspice — served over spaghetti, invented by Macedonian immigrants Tom and John Kiradjieff at their Empress restaurant in the 1920s. They adapted a Balkan stew to American tastes by serving it over hot dogs and pasta.

The ordering system is unique to Cincinnati: "ways" describe the layers. A "three-way" is spaghetti, chili, shredded cheddar. A "four-way" adds onions or beans. A "five-way" has both. Skyline Chili and Gold Star Chili are the two rival chains — Cincinnati residents choose sides the way other cities choose sports teams.

Greater Cincinnati has over 250 chili parlors — more per capita than any other metro area in the US. Residents consume over 2 million pounds of Cincinnati chili annually.

Procter & Gamble: The Company That Invented Modern Marketing

Procter & Gamble was founded in Cincinnati in 1837 by candlemaker William Procter and soap maker James Gamble (both married sisters, and their father-in-law suggested the partnership). P&G invented the concept of brand management, the soap opera (they literally sponsored daytime radio dramas to sell soap), and modern market research.

Today P&G is a $80+ billion company with brands including Tide, Gillette, Pampers, Crest, and Charmin — touching 5 billion consumers globally. Their world headquarters occupies two iconic towers on 6th Street in downtown Cincinnati, employing over 10,000 in the 513 area code alone. Cincinnati also hosts Kroger (the largest US grocery chain) and Fifth Third Bancorp.

The "Paris of America"

In the 1850s, Cincinnati was nicknamed the "Paris of America" for its extraordinary architecture, arts, and culture. The city's Music Hall (1878) — a Victorian Gothic masterpiece — still hosts the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (founded 1895, one of the five oldest in the US).

The Roebling Suspension Bridge (1866), connecting Cincinnati to Covington, Kentucky, was the longest suspension bridge in the world when built — and served as the prototype for John Roebling's next project: the Brooklyn Bridge. The Cincinnati version still carries traffic today.

Over-the-Rhine: America's Largest Intact Historic District

Just north of downtown, Over-the-Rhine (OTR) contains the largest collection of Italianate architecture in the United States — 943 contributing structures in the National Register historic district. Named because German immigrants in the 1800s joked that crossing the Miami-Erie Canal from downtown felt like "crossing the Rhine."

OTR is also where Oktoberfest Zinzinnati takes place — the largest Oktoberfest in America (since 1976), drawing 700,000+ visitors annually. The neighborhood has undergone massive revitalization since 2010, becoming one of the trendiest urban districts in the Midwest.

Kings Island & Sports

Kings Island in Mason (within the 513) is one of the largest amusement parks in the Midwest, famous for its record-breaking roller coasters. The park's Eiffel Tower replica (built 1972) is a regional landmark visible from I-71.

The 513 is also home to the Cincinnati Bengals (NFL), Cincinnati Reds (MLB — the oldest professional baseball team, founded 1881), and FC Cincinnati (MLS). The Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in Mason is one of the largest ATP/WTA events outside the Grand Slams.

Time Zone & Best Calling Times

513 Area Code: Scam & Spam Analysis

Area code 513 is legitimate, but the Ohio Attorney General has issued specific warnings about scams using spoofed 513 numbers. Scammers exploit caller ID to make calls appear local — the calls often don't originate from Cincinnati at all.

Common 513 Scam Schemes

  • Bank/credit card phishing — claims there's a "problem with your account," asks for card number or PIN to "verify"
  • Health insurance enrollment — calls during open enrollment periods offering "incredible rates" that require immediate personal information
  • Amazon impersonation — claims a large purchase was made on your account, connects you to a "fraud department" that steals your login
  • Caller ID spoofing — Ohio AG confirmed most "513" scam calls don't originate locally; hang up and call your bank directly using the number on your statement

How to Protect Yourself

  • Your bank will never ask for your PIN or full card number by phone
  • If concerned about your account, hang up and call the number on your card/statement
  • Amazon does not call about unauthorized purchases — check your account online
  • Report scam calls to the Ohio AG Consumer Protection at 800-282-0515
  • Use your phone's built-in spam filtering or register at donotcall.gov
