What is a WhatsApp QR code?
A WhatsApp QR code encodes a wa.me link. When scanned with a phone camera, it opens a WhatsApp chat with your number pre-loaded - the recipient can start typing immediately without saving you to contacts or typing your number. Optional pre-filled message lets you guide what they say first.
How is this different from WhatsApp Business native QR code?
WhatsApp Business app generates a QR code for adding a contact (it saves your number to the scanner contacts but does NOT open a chat). Our tool generates a wa.me/click-to-chat QR code that opens an active chat directly. Both have valid use cases: business native QR for adding-as-contact workflows; wa.me QR for inviting immediate messaging.
Do I need WhatsApp installed for the QR code to work?
The scanner (your customer) needs WhatsApp installed. If they do not have it, the wa.me link takes them to the WhatsApp install page. You (the QR owner) do not need anything specific - the wa.me URL is just a public deep link. Once they scan and tap, WhatsApp opens with your number ready to chat.
Can I pre-fill a message in the WhatsApp QR code?
Yes. Add a pre-filled message and the QR code encodes wa.me/PHONE?text=YOUR_MESSAGE. When the customer scans and taps Send, your message is already typed in their compose box. Great for support workflows (Hi I need help with order #), restaurant orders, real-estate inquiries.
What format should the phone number be in?
International format WITHOUT spaces, dashes, or the leading + (just digits). Example: 14155550123 for a US number, 442079460958 for a UK number, 919876543210 for an India number. The wa.me URL strips any non-digit characters automatically, but it's safest to use clean digits.
Where can I use a WhatsApp QR code?
Anywhere a customer might want to start a WhatsApp chat: business cards, storefronts, restaurant menus (for orders / reservations), real-estate For Sale signs, conference badges, email signatures, Instagram bios, retail receipts, packaging. Particularly common in markets where WhatsApp dominates business comms - LATAM, India, Middle East, parts of Asia and Africa.
Does WhatsApp charge for using wa.me links?
No. wa.me click-to-chat links are free and provided by WhatsApp itself. There is no API call required, no per-message cost (unless you are using the WhatsApp Business API, which has separate pricing). Your customer pays nothing; you pay nothing. The chat is a standard WhatsApp message thread.
Can I edit the WhatsApp QR code later?
No. QR codes are static images that encode whatever was generated at the time. If your WhatsApp number changes, you need to regenerate and reprint. For dynamic QR codes that redirect to a wa.me URL you can update later, use a paid QR service. For most personal/business use cases, static is fine.
Does this tool track or store my number?
No. The QR code is generated entirely in your browser using the qrcode JavaScript library. Your phone number and any pre-filled message never leave your device. We do not track, store, or transmit anything you enter.
Is WhatsApp available in every country?
No. WhatsApp voice and chat are BLOCKED in several countries: UAE (TDRA blocks consumer VoIP), China (Great Firewall), and partially blocked in Iran, Qatar, and Egypt depending on enforcement. Before generating a WhatsApp QR for a business serving customers in these regions, consider whether they can actually use it. Our WhatsApp Voice Blocked by Country article has the full status table.
