Free: App-to-App Calls
Both people need the app and internet. No charges, no limits.
1. WhatsApp — Very Popular in Greece
WhatsApp is widely used in Greece, especially among younger Greeks. Voice and video calls are free. Greece has solid 4G coverage from Cosmote, Vodafone, and Wind, with 5G expanding in Athens and Thessaloniki.
2. Viber — Unusually Popular in Greece
Viber has a strong following in Greece — more so than in most Western European countries. Many Greeks, especially older generations, use Viber as their primary messaging app. Free calls between Viber users work well. If your Greek contact prefers Viber over WhatsApp, this is worth noting.
Why Viber? Viber gained early traction in Greece and stuck. It's similar to how LINE dominates Japan or KakaoTalk dominates Korea — early adoption created network effects.
3. Facebook Messenger — Also Common
Facebook is popular in Greece, and Messenger calls are widely used. Good option for group family calls across the US and Greece.
4. FaceTime — For iPhone Users
iPhone market share in Greece is around 25-30%. Samsung is more popular. FaceTime works if both sides have Apple devices, but ask first.

Tips for Calling Greece
- Greece is 7 hours ahead of EST (EET, UTC+2). When it's 10 AM in New York, it's 5 PM in Athens. Best window: 9-11 AM EST (4-6 PM Athens) or 12-2 PM EST (7-9 PM Athens)
- No leading 0 — Greece, like Spain and Italy, does not use a leading 0. Dial the full number with +30. This is different from Germany, France, or the UK where you drop the 0
