Whether you're calling family in Bridgetown, connecting with the Bajan diaspora in NYC or Toronto, or checking in from vacation, here's every option.
Warning: The +1 Billing Trap
Barbados uses +1-246 — the same +1 country code as the US and Canada. This is a trap. Your carrier may make it look like a domestic call, but it's billed as international. AT&T and Verizon charge $3-5/min for +1-246 calls. The +1 code doesn't mean it's free or cheap.
Free: App-to-App Calls
Both people need the app and internet. No charges, no limits.
1. WhatsApp — Dominant
WhatsApp is the primary communication app in Barbados. Nearly everyone uses it for messaging and calls. Voice and video calls work well — Barbados has decent internet infrastructure for a Caribbean nation.
2. FaceTime — Good for iPhone Users
iPhone penetration is moderate in Barbados. FaceTime works well for Apple-to-Apple calls. A solid free option if both have iPhones.
3. Facebook Messenger — Also Used
Messenger is used in Barbados, especially among younger users. Voice calls work as an alternative to WhatsApp.
Calling Barbadian Phone Numbers
| Service | Rate | 60-min Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | $0.03/min | $1.80 | Best value |
| BubblyPhone | $0.51/min | $27.00 | Browser, iOS, Android |
| AT&T / Verizon | $3.00-5.00/min | $180-300 | +1 trap — billed as international! |
Our honest take: BubblyPhone at $0.51/min is not the cheapest for Barbados. Google Voice ($0.03/min) is 15x cheaper. Use WhatsApp for free calls, Google Voice for phone numbers. Never dial +1-246 from your regular carrier — you'll pay international rates despite the +1 prefix.
