+62 Country Code: Indonesia. How to Read, Check and Dial a +62 Number

Updated September 14, 202611 min readBubblyPhone Team

+62 is Indonesia's country code. Decode any +62 number (operator, mobile or landline), dial it from the US, UK or Australia, and spot a +62 scam call.

A call travelling from a smartphone across the sea to the Indonesian archipelago

+62 is the country code for Indonesia, and only Indonesia.

  • A number starting +62 8 is an Indonesian mobile. Any other digit after 62 is a landline area code.
  • To call one, dial your exit code (011 from the US, 00 from the UK), then 62, then the number without its leading 0.
  • An unexpected call or WhatsApp message from +62 is not automatically a scam, but a one-ring call or a “wrong number” chat from a stranger usually is.

What the +62 country code means

Every country has a one to three digit calling code, and Indonesia's is 62. When a phone shows a number as +62 812 3456 7890, the plus sign stands for “dial your international exit code here”, 62 routes the call to Indonesia, and the rest is the national number. The same number can appear in several disguises:

  • +62 812 3456 7890: international format, the one to save in your contacts.
  • 0062 812 3456 7890: the same number with the 00 exit code used across Europe and much of Asia written in.
  • 011 62 812 3456 7890: the same number with the US and Canadian exit code written in.
  • 0812 3456 7890: the domestic format used inside Indonesia. The 0 replaces +62 and is never dialed from abroad.

+62 is not an area code. Indonesian area codes come after it (21 for Jakarta, 361 for Bali), and Indonesian mobile prefixes (812, 857, 896 and so on) come after it too. Searches like “0813 country code” are really asking about a mobile prefix; the country code behind every one of those numbers is +62.

The neighbouring codes are easy to mix up on a small screen. They all sit in the same numbering zone, but each belongs to a different country:

+62Indonesia
+63Philippines

Check a +62 number

Paste any Indonesian number and this decoder tells you whether it is a mobile, a landline or a satellite phone, which operator issued it or which city it belongs to, and exactly how to dial it from where you are.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Operator prefixes are current as of September 2026. For a live check of who owns a number, use our free phone number checker.

How to read an Indonesian phone number

The digit straight after 62 tells you almost everything. If it is an 8, you are looking at a mobile number, and the two digits after the 8 identify the operator. If it is anything else, you are looking at a landline, and the first two or three digits are a city or regional area code.

Mobile
+62 8xx xxxx xxxx

9 to 11 digits after +62, most often 10 or 11. Domestically written 08xx-xxxx-xxxx. Example: 0857 1234 5678 becomes +62 857 1234 5678.

Landline
+62 21 xxxx xxxx

8 to 10 digits after +62: a 2 or 3 digit area code plus 6 to 8 local digits. Example: a Jakarta office at 021 1234 5678 becomes +62 21 1234 5678.

Two details trip people up. First, Indonesian mobile numbers vary in length, so a number that looks a digit shorter than your last contact's is not necessarily wrong. Second, the domestic 0 is part of the national dialing plan, not part of the number. Keep it in Indonesia, drop it everywhere else.

Indonesian mobile prefixes by operator (2026)

Indonesia now has three mobile groups, down from five a few years ago. Indosat Ooredoo and Hutchison's Tri merged in January 2022 to form Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and XL Axiata completed its merger with Smartfren on 16 April 2025 to form XLSmart. The old brand names are still printed on SIM packs and still show up in caller-ID apps, so the table lists both the company and the brand.

0868ByruPasifik Satelit Nusantara (satellite phones)

Telkomsel is the state-linked market leader with the widest coverage across the outer islands, which is why 0812 and 0813 are the prefixes you will see most. A prefix tells you which company issued the SIM. It does not tell you where the phone is now, and it does not tell you who is holding it: Indonesia has required prepaid SIMs to be registered to a national ID number since 2018, yet registered SIMs are still resold in bulk, which is how scam operations get hold of them.

Landline area codes for major cities

Landlines are a small share of Indonesian numbers, but they are the ones you will call when you reach a hotel, an embassy, a hospital or a government office. Drop the 0 from the area code when dialing from abroad.

How to dial +62 from abroad

The rule is the same from every country: exit code, then 62, then the national number without its leading 0. Only the exit code changes.

The three mistakes that produce a “number not in service” message:

  • Keeping the 0. +62 0812 … fails. The 0 and the +62 do the same job; use one or the other.
  • Mixing the plus and the exit code. +011 62 … fails. Dial either +62 or 011 62.
  • Copying a number from a website that already includes 62. Indonesian businesses often print +62 21 … and 021 … on the same page. Pick one format and dial it once.

Getting calls or WhatsApp messages from +62?

A +62 number is an Indonesian number. That is all the code tells you. Whether the call is worth answering depends on what it looks like:

  • One ring, then silence. This is the wangiri pattern. The caller wants you to ring back, which either connects you to a premium-rate line or confirms your number is live. Do not call back. Search the number first, or paste it into the decoder above and our number checker.
  • A WhatsApp message from a stranger. “Sorry, wrong number” openers, job offers for liking videos, and investment tips from someone who addresses you by the wrong name are the standard scripts. Replying, even to say stop, marks your number as active. Block and report instead.
  • A call you were half expecting. A villa you booked in Bali, a supplier in Surabaya, a freelancer in Jakarta or a relative on a new SIM will all show up as +62. A quick check of the prefix and the city usually settles it.

Indonesia is one of the largest WhatsApp markets in the world, and its prepaid SIMs are cheap, which is why so much unsolicited traffic carries a +62 prefix. It does not mean the person behind the number is in Indonesia; SIMs and virtual numbers are traded across borders. We cover the two most common cases in detail: WhatsApp messages from +62 and missed calls from +62.

Calling Indonesia: what it costs and when to call

Indonesia is not an expensive destination for internet calling. With BubblyPhone a call to an Indonesian mobile costs between $0.13 and $0.17 per minute depending on the operator, and a landline about $0.16 per minute, billed by the minute with no subscription. Standard mobile plans without an international add-on charge far more, so check your plan before dialing direct. WhatsApp and similar apps are free when both sides have the app and a data connection, which is the norm for personal contacts in Indonesia but not for businesses, hotels or offices.

Timing matters more than price. Indonesia spans three time zones and never changes its clocks:

ZoneCovers
WIB (UTC+7)Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan, all of Java and Sumatra
WITA (UTC+8)Bali, Lombok, Makassar, Balikpapan, most of Kalimantan and Sulawesi
WIT (UTC+9)Maluku and Papua, including Jayapura

Jakarta is 11 hours ahead of New York during US daylight time and 12 hours ahead in winter, and 6 hours ahead of London in British summer time. From the US east coast, 7 to 9 in the morning reaches Jakarta in the early evening; from the UK, late morning reaches Jakarta at the end of the working day. Friday midday prayers and the Ramadan fasting month change business hours across the country.
